About Me

I was born and raised in Grand Island, NE and then moved to Lincoln, NE for college. I stayed in Lincoln for several years, getting a couple of degrees from the University of Nebraska and working as a cook in a Haymarket restaurant. I then moved to Bloomington, IN to study for a Ph.D. at Indiana University. I both loved it and hated it, and this is also where I met my wife, Ursula, who was in a related doctoral program. While there, we adopted two cat terrorists, and they have been with us since. (I have heard Alan talk of cat hammers, but we have not located a store that sells them.)

After finishing my Ph.D. program (and enjoying Bob’s splendid company at my graduation), I moved to Oklahoma, where I worked as a professor at Oklahoma State University for several years. Being tired of living two states away from Ursula and finding academia a grind, I left that career in 2019 and moved back to Lincoln (where, by that time, Ursula was working as a professor at UNL). We rode out the pandemic there in Lincoln, at which point Ursula had also had enough of academia, so we both left our jobs at the university and moved to Omaha, where we now live. I work remotely (for the University of Illinois) and travel frequently to Munich, Germany, where Ursula deals with work and family matters and I provide moral support. We are planning a move in 2025 to Landsberg am Lech, a beautiful Bavarian town about 45 minutes from Munich.
